International Teacher Training:

What’s Involved?

Sanda+Magbalantor+school%2C+rural+Sierra+Leone

This programme is your chance to take on a fantastic adventure, whilst making a difference to the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable children. 121 million school-aged children are currently out of education world-wide. Millions more are in school but failing to learn. You will be helping Street Child to change this in West Africa, by assisting on our Teacher Training Programme.

We realise this is a big commitment for you to make, which is why our team is there to support you the whole way.

Trip Overview.

I really valued the opportunity to talk to the teachers there and to see how they handle challenges both familiar and strange.
— Joanna, 2017 Volunteer

During this two-week trip you will be travelling across Sierra Leone to join our teams of teacher trainers and help equip rural teachers with the tools to give their students a quality education. “Off the beaten track” is an understatement! You will be staying in local communities and get to know the country and its famously welcoming people. You will also have plenty of opportunity to see the local towns, eat your fill of fresh mangoes and stock up on lappa (the colourful West African fabric) to take home.

Adventure through Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone beaches

Rough Guides named Sierra Leone a top 10 travel destination for 2018, and our team will make sure you can get the most out of your stay. We definitely recommend you sign up for the Beach Extension at the end of your programme as a chance for you to wind down before you head back home.

Once you’re home, the adventure doesn’t stop there - imagine the stories you will be bringing back to the classroom!

For the 2 weeks you are with us, we will coordinate everything you need. However, Sierra Leone is one of the world’s poorest countries, with very basic infrastructure and so you’ll need to be prepared for hiccoughs (power cuts and bucket showers) - it is an adventure after all!

Fundraising.

As part of the programme, we ask that you aim to raise £1,000 in aid of Street Child, and you will have a dedicated member of the Street Child team to help you get there. Our project work is only made possible through successful fundraising, and so this is a great way to make an even bigger contribution to Street Child’s work. (Click here to find out more about the fundraising). During your trip, you'll have unique opportunity to actually see the impact of your fundraising!
