What will I be doing?

121 million school-aged children are currently out of education world-wide.  Millions more children are in school but failing to learn. Street Child is working to change that using sustainable and scalable solutions. Our work in West Africa is focused on improving the quality of education for particularly vulnerable children, and our Teacher Training Programme is at the heart of this work.

You will be playing a part in helping to make this happen. Working alongside our dedicated teams, you will be travelling across the country, helping to train local teachers & supporting them to deliver catch-up classes for their students. These ‘Learning Camps’ are proven to significantly improve learning outcomes for the children, and so have transformative effects on their futures.

Why Sign Up?

Children at school, Sierra Leone

Make a meaningful difference.

We support teachers and communities so they can provide quality education to the children they work for. Working alongside our local staff, your skills can help make this happen. In Sierra Leone we have built high-quality classrooms to help reduce overcrowding in secondary schools and we are working to improve the quality of education in schools across rural Liberia.

Grow as an educator.

Did someone say CPD? Exchanging ideas with your fellow volunteers, our local teams & the local teachers on the projects, you will learn as much as you teach from the people around you. Leadership, resourcefulness & adaptability are just a few of the skills you will be honing. You will also return with stories to share and new ideas for engaging your students to turn your classroom into a place of colourful discovery.

Discover new places.

“Off the beaten track” is an understatement! Your trip to the schools will take you across Sierra Leone and Liberia to some of the most rural, hard-to-reach areas. You will have plenty of opportunity to wander the local towns, eat your fill of fresh mangoes and stock up on lappa (the West African printed cloth) to take home. If you can handle a bucket shower or three and want a real taste of life where we work, we promise you an experience like no other!

What You Need To Know.

This is a two-week trip, in which you will travel into the rural regions of Sierra Leone or Liberia to stay in the local communities. If you want to extend your trip to have a well-earned rest at the end, we can help organise a beach extension to stay on some of West Africa's beautiful palm-fringed beaches.

There are three trips available, with the option of travelling to either Sierra Leone or Liberia:

Easter 2019 Programme:
Saturday 6th April - Thursday 18th April 2019 (Saturday 20th April with beach extension)

Summer 2019 Programme:
Sunday 28th July - Friday 9th August 2019 (Sunday 11th August with beach extension)
Sunday 11th August - Friday 23rd August 2019 (Sunday 25th August with beach extension)

Our teacher packages cost £145 per week and cover basic accommodation, all project-specific transport and airport transfers.

You will need to cover your return flights, vaccinations (you must be covered for Yellow Fever and take Malaria tablets), travel insurance, visa and additional spending money. Please feel free to get in touch for more information on programme costs.

We ask that volunteers pledge to raise a minimum of £1,000 towards Street Child’s global programmes. Our project work is only made possible through successful fundraising, and so this is a great way to make an even bigger contribution to Street Child’s work. (Click here to find out more about the fundraising). During your trip, you'll have the chance to visit rural schools to see the impact of your fundraising!

For teachers who smash their fundraising target, we are offering to cover the costs of your trip. Get in touch with our team to find out more.
