International Teacher Training Programme.
Spend two weeks of your Easter or Summer holidays using your teaching skills to change the lives of thousands of children in Sierra Leone.
Travel to some of the most remote parts of Sierra Leone, and discover beautiful West Africa whilst you gain international professional development experience and support Street Child's work improving education in the world's toughest places.
Working directly with local Street Child staff, you'll learn as much as you give, you'll meet people you'll never forget and have an adventure that will leave a positive footprint long-term.
What You Will Be Doing.
The two week programme will support Street Child's work improving education quality in Sierra Leone, where children often miss out on the opportunity to gain even the most basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Working alongside our experienced team, you'll be supporting local communities to hold intensive catch-up classes - an initiative designed around extensive research which has been shown to significantly improve learning outcomes. By lending your skills to a development setting, you will be helping to build the capacity of local volunteers and providing them with the skills and support to lead catch-up classes in their communities. The programme will focus on the basics - equipping children with vital literacy and numeracy skills, in a scalable and sustainable way.
Teachers from all subjects are welcome on the programme - our team will be on hand to help you prepare and provide you with all the necessary resources before you go.
We ask all volunteers to fundraise in support of Street Child’s work prior to departure – this is as much a part of your placement as your time in-country and contributes to the long-term sustainability of our projects. During your trip, you'll have the chance to visit rural schools to see the impact your fundraising will have and the vital support that this lends to our work on the ground. Come back inspired with stories to share with your class.
On your trip you will stay in local communities and get to know Sierra Leone and their famously welcoming people first-hand. You will be part of a group of teachers travelling together to explore West Africa.
About Street Child.
121 million school-aged children are currently out of education world-wide. Millions more children are in school but failing to learn. Street Child is working to change that.
Our focus is on low-cost sustainable solutions that make a real difference to the children we support. Since 2008, we have helped over 200,000 children in 10 countries across Africa and Asia to go to school and supported over 15,000 families to set up businesses so they can afford the cost of educating their children long-term. Our rural schools work focuses building schools, training teachers, promoting the importance of education and ensuring that all solutions are sustainable.

Previous volunteers have called the programme "inspiring", "eye-opening" and even "life-changing". Here are our top six reasons you should join us in your next holiday...
What You Need To Know.
Street Child’s volunteer programme is a two-week trip. You'll stay in local communities and get to know the countries and their famously welcoming people first-hand. Travel out with a group of like-minded teachers and share your experience discovering real West Africa. If you want to extend your trip, we can help organise a beach extension giving you an opportunity to relax on some of West Africa's beautiful palm-fringed beaches.
Summer 2019 Programme:
Sunday 28th July - Friday 9th August (Sunday 11th August with beach extension)
Sunday 11th August - Friday 23rd August (Sunday 25th August with beach extension)
Summer 2020 Programme dates TBC shortly.
The programme cost is £345 and covers basic accommodation, breakfast, lunch, all project-specific transport and airport transfers.
You will need to cover your return flights, vaccinations (you must be covered for Yellow Fever and take Malaria tablets), travel insurance, visa and additional spending money. Please get in touch for more information on programme costs.
We ask all volunteers to commit to a minimum fundraising target of £1,000. Your fundraising supports the long term sustainability of your volunteering and our work helping children to go to school and learn. This work is only possible thanks to fundraising.
Furthermore, your fundraising helps raise awareness of our work and the country you will be volunteering in. It may even inspire more people to get involved with Street Child! We will be there to support you with help and ideas - we encourage you to get your school involved. By sharing your experience with your class and involving them in your fundraising activities, your trip will give them a unique insight into the challenges faced by other students around the world and can teach them about international development issues.
For teachers who smash their fundraising target, we are offering to cover the costs of your trip. Get in touch with our team to find out more.
