Why volunteer for Street Child?

With Street Child you'll be working closely with our local teams for an authentic international volunteering experience that will make a true and sustainable long term difference for all involved. As a charity, we truly value volunteers. There is a real need for your support on our projects so we work hard to match your skills to where you can have maximum impact.

We work with our in-country teams to match your background and experience with the right projects to ensure you have maximum impact. Our placements are not for everyone as living conditions can be basic with limited access to running water, WiFi and electricity. But we guarantee an experience like no other, an adventure that also leaves a positive footprint.

Now you know why you should volunteer with Street Child, check out where you could volunteer with us!

OUR ETHOS.

As a Street Child International Volunteer you will be adding capacity and supporting our exceptional local teams whose dedicated work is making a significant and long-lasting impact. We look for volunteers who can commit to our ethos:

  • SUSTAINABILITY: Sustainability sits at the heart of everything we do. It is important that all our volunteers contribute in a useful and meaningful way that will have a long term impact.
  • IMPACT: Throughout their placements our volunteers should strive to make the greatest impact and a long lasting legacy.
  • RESPONSIBILITY:  From practically preparing for your trip to carrying out work on the ground our volunteers are accountable for their own contribution and experience. Humility, collaboration and openness are key to getting the most out of your experience and for making the greatest impact.

THE COSTS.

There is not a fee for joining  the Street Child volunteering programme. However all roles are self funded and you will need to cover your return flights, vaccinations, meals, travel insurance and visa. You will also pay a daily rate to Street Child which covers accommodation, airport transfers and work related in-country travel. The daily rate varies dependent by country but is typically £7-£10 per day.

We also ask all our volunteers to fundraise a minimum of £1000. Your fundraising supports the long term sustainability of your volunteering and our work helping children go to school. This work is only possible thanks to fundraising.

Furthermore, your fundraising helps raise awareness of our work and the country you will be volunteering in. It may even inspire more people to get involved with Street Child be that through volunteering themselves or attending our events.

While fundraising may seem daunting, we are confident you will find it easier than you first imagine! We will be there to support you with help and ideas and in our experience, many volunteers significantly exceed their target. For those planning to work in the charity sector over the longer term, this is the chance to learn valuable fundraising skills which will stand you in good stead for the future.

We have a variety of roles available and aim to facilitate different levels of qualifications. However, at the same time some of our roles require a specific skillset and some technical knowledge, including an interest in international development. Overall, Street Child prioritises personal attributes and character.

Accommodation.

Street Child provides accommodation at a fixed daily rate (see next FAQ) for volunteers.

What is a daily rate? What does it cover?

The daily rate is a fixed cost that as a volunteer you pay to Street Child. It covers accommodation, airport transfers and work related in-country travel. The daily rate varies by country but is typically £7-£10 per day.

Can I go with friends?

Yes! We do our best to accommodate groups - this however depends on what skills you can bring to the table!

Can I take time off and travel?

Yes, absolutely.  We fully encourage you to make the most of weekends and explore the incredible culture and society of Africa and South Asia! If you are keen to take more than a weekend off to travel then we encourage volunteers to ensure they have an extra week at the end of their placement to do so.

Volunteers are required to cover their own insurance (travel, health, belongings, etc.)

Health and Vaccinations.

How do I fundraise?

Up to you! There are many different ways that you can fundraise. It is a brilliant opportunity to be involved in something worthwhile, contributing to Street Child’s ongoing development. You will be assigned a fundraising mentor, who can assist you with the process, so do not worry if you have not fundraised before!

Where does the money I have fundraised go?

Everything fundraised by our volunteers goes to Street Child's general pot and is spent on a needs basis. This is a great way for us to support our programmes on the ground as well as for advocacy.

What do I get out of it?

Volunteering in some of the poorest countries in the world is a unique chance to work in a fascinating environment, hone your skills and gain first-hand experience in international development. You will be working closely with Street Child’s in-country team. A line manager will be assigned to you who monitor your progress. Other volunteers will be around - perhaps working on different projects - with whom you can work and travel.
